Gräf & Lantz, is a Los Angeles based design studio
founded by Holger Gräf and Daniel Lantz. Our goal is to create products that
are luxurious, aware and functional. We have chosen to primarily use high
quality 100% merino wool felt which we have produced and imported from Germany.
By combining felt with other natural materials we highlight its deep rich
colors and unique texture. Each piece is handmade in the USA.
About
felt We import our custom felts from
Germany which has a rich history of felt manufacturing that continues today.
The felts we use are made of merino wool (except for our Swiss felt) which is prized for its ultra fine fibers and soft feel. The
natural oil content of the wool makes our felt stain and water resistant. If
any spills occur just dab off moisture with a wet towel or rinse lightly with
water and it can be dry cleaned as well if necessary. Best of all wool felt is a natural, sustainable and
biodegradable material.
Swiss wool felt
Our latest exclusive felt
- made with wool from Swiss sheep.
Until recently wool from
Swiss sheep was often discarded since there was no market for its more coarse
fibers. Most wool felts available today use the fine-fiber wool from South
African and Australian sheep.
Now a Swiss non-profit that
employs socially disenfranchised people is aiming to change that by
collecting wool from Swiss sheep to be turned into felt. The result is a
uniquely beautiful and natural material with a classic, rugged feel. The wool
is purified but not dyed or bleached so that it maintains its natural color.
Look closely and you will see the intentional remnants of grasses left in the
felt and you can imagine some very happy sheep grazing on pristine alpine
meadows.
The felt comes in two
colors, white and brown. The brown felt is made with the wool of black sheep
which is not uniformly black but rather a range of shades from black all the
way to light brown and white. As the various shades and subtle colors become
dispersed evenly through the felting process they form a uniformly rich, medium
brown color. Due to the rarity of black sheep in Switzerland there is only a
limited supply of brown felt available every year making it a very rare
product.
The Swiss wool felt is one
of a kind and has only been on the market since March ‘09. Due to the limited
supply Gräf & Lantz is the exclusive North American outlet for this unique
felt.
